Simple Shading and Shadows using Copic Markers

Today I’m sharing one of these super cute images from C.C. Designs. I’ll be showing you a tutorial on Simple Shading and Shadows using Copic Markers. In this tutorial you only need about half of the colors I normally use. I’ll list those below. The stamp I’m using is from C.C. Designs April release and she’s called Swiss Pixie HB2U Birgitta Rubber Stamp. I’ve stamped her in Black Memento Ink onto my Copic Xpress Blending Card.

I get so many emails about where to add shadows and how to shade colors. So I put this tutorial together perfect for those who don’t have that flicking technique down, quite yet.

Copic Marker List:

  • Skin – E000, E11, E13
  • Cheeks – R20, R01
  • Hair – N3, N5, N7, N9
  • Dress – BG15, BG10, B91, B97
  • HB2U and Hat – Y17, Y13, R22, R20, V09, V05, BV04, BV00, B91, BG5, BG10
  • Grass – YG17, G28
  • Ground –  E0000, E30, E31, E33
  • Sky – B00, BG000

Step by Step Copic Marker Tutorial

So, first you’re going to want to do one coat of E000.

Then, think where do the shadows make sense. I’ve added shadows using my E11 to all the places that make sense and there would be a shadow. If you haven’t read my blog post on Stop trying to find the light source, you should check it out!

*Notice I just traced the outline of the shadowed areas. No Flicking*

Then trace the E11, using the E000.

Now, darken those shadows a little by adding some E13.

Then, do the same thing blending the E11 into the e13 by tracing the E13 outline.

And repeat with the E000.

So, that was all for the skin. You have a nice deep shadow without all the blending and flicking.

Now, Let’s try the same style of shadowing with the hair.

I focused on outlining the bottom of the hat, and those dark lines already in the image using N7.

Now, taking N5 go along ONE of the sides of the N7.

Then, fill in the hair completely using N3.

Go back and shadow the area where we first laid down the N7, but this time were using N9.

Then repeat using N5.

Then, one more swipe over using N3.

I hope this little tutorial has helped you in your Simple Shading and Shadows using Copic Markers.

Now, when coloring the sky I just laid down one layer of B00 and I kept it a little streaky. Leaving a little lighter areas of white so that it looks blotchy and giving the sky some texture. I only went in some areas with my BG000.
