Creating and Coloring Pleats using Copic Markers
I’ve gotten quite a few emails about coloring clothes and specifically, Creating and Coloring Pleats using Copic Markers. So I wanted to share some of my advice and tips doing so. I think coloring pleated clothes become so much easier once you have a little bit of direction.
You can coloring this image with me by downloading it from My Creative Library — which is a digital library of my digital stamps and papers. You can sign up below for access!

If you have downloaded my image you will see in the graphic below that I have an arrow pointed to a line. This is where your shadow is going to go, to create the pleat. If you are not using my image, study the image you are using so you can see which pleats appear closer to you. So any pleat or line behind will have a shadow. You can tell by the way it curves and if there’s no difference you can make up how you want the pleats to go. Another way to tell is the way the bottom of the dress or clothing falls. You can see in my image some of the round outwards which would appear closer and some are rounded back and those are going to be darker and more hidden, tucked away.
Make sure you are using Copic Friendly paper, too. I’ve had a quite a few people e-mail me about ink coming out of the lines, or not blending, paper has a lot to do with it. So make sure you are using a smooth thick card stock. My favorite card stock to use is Cryogen. My second choice of paper would be Copic Xpress!
I used the no line stamping technique on this image. To achieve this effect with digis you have to lower the opacity — but I have gone a head and did it for you. So there will be 2 different downloads available. Black outline and the ‘no line’. I also left the eyes dark, so you don’t have to worry about outlining and filling them in. I’ve done a class on that before with stamped images and that was difficult for a lot of people. You’re Welcome!! 🙂
