Copic Markers and No Line Coloring Technique
Today I’m going to go into detail about one of my favorite techniques, ‘No Line Coloring Technique’. Copic Markers alone can be a challenge but Copic Markers and No Line Coloring Technique can be especially intimidating. Hopefully after reading this post you’ll feel a little more at ease with this technique.
– Choose Your Image –
If you are a beginner Copic artist or new to the No Line Coloring Technique I suggest you pick an image that is simple. If you choose an animal or person, I think that using ones with eyes that are simple will work best. Sometimes the details in the eyes can really be difficult to do especially having to make 2 eyes because they need to be pretty much the same size or they will look funny and probably really discourage you from doing the technique again.
– Stamping /Printing Your Image –
Now that you have your image/stamp picked out you need to stamp in onto your Copic Friendly Paper. We want the image to appear lighter, so when we add color to it, it covers up the stamped image giving your image a soft hand-drawn and colored look. So, I stamp in Memento Desert Sand Ink and onto my Copic Xpress Blending Card.
If you decided to use a digi stamp there is such an easy way to get this lighter appearance. No need to re-color your image’s outline into a lighter color. All you need to do is change the opacity of the image. This lightens the image by percentage. I usually will drop the opacity to about 20%. A little more or a little less depending on how detailed the image is.
– Coloring the No Line Coloring Technique –
Before you take a look at my step by step tutorial I want to share a few tips to think about when coloring.
Light Source – Where do the shadows make the most sense? Don’t think of the light direction — just think of the position of your image. For example my little monkey has small shadowed areas on the sides of his head (giving that round head appearance), under his chin and arms and on the insides of his legs and ears.
Make sure you DO NOT just outline the image. In the photo below you will see the areas that are going to be darker and I’m going to take each lighter color and come out a little more each time. This includes coming out a little more each time to outline the image.
I’m using E0000, E30, E31, E33 and E37. The adorable stamp set I’m using Chunky Monkey Stamp set by Sugarpea Designs.
